BAHA / Ponto Bone Conduction Devices
Children with atresia (where ear canals do not develop), and other conditions that prohibit the use of conventional hearing aids and earmolds, can benefit from devices placed on the mastoid bone behind the ear. This type of device causes vibration of the inner ear, stimulating the hair cells of the cochlea without going through the middle ear as hearing aids do. These devices can be worn on a soft band around the head or, once the child is at least 5 years of age, a surgical procedure can allow the device to be worn without the softband.
BAHA / Ponto devices are also approved for use in children and adults with single sided deafness or SSD (profound hearing loss in only one ear.)
Two manufactures currently supply these devices:
- Cochlear Corporation manufactures the BAHA
(Bone Anchored Hearing Aid Device. Image property of Cochlear Corporation)

- Oticon Medical manufactures the Ponto and Ponto Pro
(image property of Oticon Medical)
